Principal Investigator
Dr. Rachel M. Theodore joined the UConn community in the Fall of 2011. She directs the UConn SLaP Lab located in the D.C. Phillips Communication Sciences Building. Dr. Theodore is Associate Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Faculty Affiliate of the Language and Cognition program in the Department of Psychological Sciences. She is Director of the Neurobiology of Language graduate training program and highly involved with two current training grants in the language sciences community (NSF NRT, NIH/NIDCD T32). She is also Faculty Affiliate of the Cognitive Science Program. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Northeastern University and completed post-doctoral training in Cognitive & Linguistic Sciences at Brown University. Both her B.S. and M.A. are in the field of Speech and Hearing Sciences. She currently serves as Associate Editor for Journal of the Acoustical Society of America – Express Letters and is Vice President of Admissions on the Board of Directors for the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. |
Ph.D. Students
Nikole Giovannone is a fifth-year doctoral student, a Jorgensen Fellow, and NSF NRT Fellow. She received her B.A. in Psycholinguistics from Mount Holyoke College. Her current research examines individual differences in speech perception across language ability using both behavioral and EEG methodology. | |
Lee Drown is a fourth-year doctoral student and NIH/NIDCD T32 Predoctoral Fellow. She received her B.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Ithaca College as an Honors scholar and her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her current research examines sensitivity to structured phonetic variation in speech perception and its relationship auditory processing in development language disorder. |

Kaidi Chen is a fourth-year doctoral student in the Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies program in the Department of Literatures, Cultures and Languages. He received his B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature in mainland China and his M.A. degree in Chinese linguistics (sociolinguistics concentration) in Macau. His research interests are at the intersection of bilingualism and second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and language pedagogy. |

Shawn Cummings is a second-year doctoral student, a recipient of the Donald Shankweiler Language Sciences Award from the CNC-CT program, and an NSF NRT Fellow. He received undergraduate degrees in both Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics the University of Rochester. His current research examines causal reasoning as a mechanism for adaptation in speech perception. |
